Sierra Site Specific
That chair in the living room of the old house. Still, it seems as though it has always been there. But before it, so many others passed through that spot. They had different shapes, were made from different woods, and witnessed so many stories. A movement, a game of musical chairs.
And what about the trees from which these chairs were made? Before, they too seemed motionless, silent. Not quite—they are beings in motion; they grow, die and are reborn; the winds sway their leaves and carry their seeds aloft, seeds that will give rise to new trees; they receive the raindrops from the clouds that pass by in endless succession. They gather the golden light of the sun, reflect the silvery glow of that moon—sometimes with a little smile, other times in its full roundness. In a dewdrop, the reflection of another tree growing. Everything is in flux too – an endless cycle of change.
And what about us, standing there in the middle of the forest? Unaware that the Earth is spinning at a maddening speed of 1,500 kilometres per hour. Deserts, mountains, seas, cities, people, ants – everything spins together. Then we imagine the Earth just sitting there in the Universe. We don’t even notice that it’s doing its little spin round the Sun at an incredible speed of over 100,000 kilometres per hour. Everything is in motion, everything is evolving, everything is changing. Who can still believe that that chair from the old house is just sitting there, still?
With this sense of Nature in motion, we have created the sculptures that adorn the old house in the Sierra São Paulo. They seek to connect the spaces of the old mansion – with its ornaments, frescoes and stained-glass windows – with Sierra’s furniture.
Solid wood has been a feature of the brand since its inception. At its very core lie the trees. And the raindrops that fall upon them, the wind that sways their leaves and flowers, the earth that cradles their roots, receives their seeds, and nurtures their rebirth. Constant transformation. Elements such as raindrops, tree trunks and branches, mushrooms and blossoming flowers, deserts, rocks and plains, seas and distant clouds, and small birds fill the spaces of the house, crafted from fine materials such as solid wood and brass, antique porcelain and glass, or natural materials such as clay, copper and handcrafted fabrics.
These sculptures inhabit the house whilst showing great respect for its original features. Many seem to float, without interfering with the paintings and fabrics on the walls. They are designs materialised in the air. Or standing still in their little corners, without forgetting that everything is in a frenzied and infinite state of motion.
